After every Halloween the internet is flooded with stories and photos of white people dressed in blackface. A brief look into American history explains why 99% of the time this is a horrible idea and extremely offensive.
There are a few examples of blackface being done in a somewhat acceptable manner (see: Tropic Thunder – even that was cringe-worthy at times), but overall it’s a great way to stumble into an ass-whooping.
“Whiteface” on the other hand is generally hilarious (as it has the luxury of having no shameful history), so after the jump check out our list of Great Moments in “Whiteface” History.
5. Martin: Bob From Marketing (by Martin Lawrence)
Martin has one of the most inaccurate, yet hilarious, white man impressions ever. As White Bob he somehow combines surfer, southern and midwestern accents into one character.
4. White Chicks (by The Wayans Brothers)
Universally this movie was panned by critics, but if you talk to people who have seen it, they can usually name at least a few scenes that made them really laugh. Granted, most of those scenes involved Terry Crews…
3. Trading Spouses – Chappelle’s Show (by Dave Chappelle)
2. Coming to America – Barbershop (by Eddie Murphy)
This joke makes me tear up with laughter every time I watch the scene. Brief, yet nearly THE best whiteface impression in history.
1. White Like Me – Saturday Night Live (by Eddie Murphy)
This iconic Saturday Night Live sketch is proof that Eddie Murphy is indeed the greatest whiteface actor of all-time. It’s decades old, but we have yet to see anyone top it.
